Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company to Host Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11 2025

By Chief Troy Hipsley
September 17, 2025

The Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company (HVFC) is joining the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) in observing Fire Prevention Week, October 5-11, 2025. This year’s campaign, "Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-ion Batteries in Your Home," aims to raise public awareness about the fire risks associated with these common rechargeable batteries and how to mitigate them.

“Lithium-ion batteries are a critical part of our daily lives, powering everything from our phones to our e-bikes,” said Troy Hipsley, Chief of the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company. “However, if these batteries are damaged, used incorrectly, or charged improperly, they can pose a serious fire risk. This year’s Fire Prevention Week is a vital opportunity for us to educate our community on how to safely use, charge, and store these devices to prevent dangerous fires.”

According to the NFPA, fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are on the rise. In 2023, U.S. fire departments responded to over 5,000 fires involving these batteries, a significant increase from previous years. The "Charge into Fire Safety" campaign focuses on three key safety actions:

BUY only listed products: Purchase products that have been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.

CHARGE devices safely: Always use the manufacturer’s cord and charger, charge on a hard surface, and unplug devices when they are fully charged.

RECYCLE batteries responsibly: Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins. Dispose of them at a designated battery recycling location.

To promote fire safety education, join us for a day of celebration and learning! Our Fire Prevention Week festivities kick off on Saturday, October 4, 2025, with a parade on Main Street at noon, commemorating our 125th anniversary. The parade will be followed by an open house at our fire station, where residents can learn more about fire safety, especially the safe use of lithium-ion batteries.

HVFC crews will also be visiting local schools during October. These events will offer hands-on opportunities to learn about lithium-ion battery safety and other essential fire prevention tips.

The HVFC encourages all residents to take time this week to inspect their homes for fire hazards and to practice a home fire escape plan. This simple action could save lives.

For more information on Fire Prevention Week and lithium-ion battery safety, visit the NFPA website at www.fpw.org or contact the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company at 410-239-4280.
