VEHICLE COLLISION WITH ROLLOVER

By Firefighter/EMT Richard Zaykoski
May 13, 2012

Sunday night, May 13th, at approximately 10 PM, Paramedic 29 and Engine 23 responded for a vehicle collision on Coon Club Road near Hoffman Mill Road. While en route, the incident was upgraded to a vehicle collision with rescue after police on the scene reported the vehicle rolled over and there was one person trapped. Police also requested the Maryland State Police Medevac helicopter. Paramedic 29 arrived and confirmed one person trapped with the vehicle resting on its side. Upon arrival, while part of the crew of Engine 23 deployed a precautionary hose line, the other crew members began stabilization of the vehicle. Chief 2 established command for the working rescue. Truck 2 arrived shortly and both the truck's crew and the engine's crew started deploying stabilization struts on both sides of the vehicle for safety before attempting to gain access to the trapped person. As the stabilization effort was concluding, the patient self-extricated through the vehicle's sunroof. After being secured to a backboard with C-spine immobilization, the patient was moved to the ambulance where the paramedic initiated trauma assessment and treatment. Because the patient had difficulty communicating, the area was searched with thermal imagers to ensure no other persons were ejected from the vehicle. No one was found. Engine/Tanker 24 secured the nearby landing site from where the patient was transported via helicopter to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center.

Units: Medic 29, Engine 23, Truck 2, Engine-Tanker 24
