| ⛈️ Summer Storm Safety Reminder: Portable Generator Safety ⛈️ With the recent severe weather and now that we’re in the heart of the summer storm season, many families may be relying on portable generators during power outages. Before the next storm hits, take a few minutes to review these important generator safety tips: ⚠️ Never operate a generator inside your home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any enclosed area. Carbon monoxide (CO) is colorless, odorless, and can be deadly in minutes. 🏠 Place generators outdoors at least 20 feet away from doors, windows, and vents, with the exhaust pointed away from your home. 🔋 Install and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level of your home, especially near sleeping areas. ⛽ Allow the generator to cool before refueling. Never add gasoline while the engine is running or hot. 🔌 Use heavy-duty extension cords rated for outdoor use, or have a licensed electrician install a transfer switch for safe connection to your home’s electrical system. 🌧️ Keep generators dry. Operate them on a dry surface under a canopy (not enclosed) or generator tent designed for outdoor use—never inside a building to protect it from rain. A little preparation can prevent tragedy. Stay weather aware, have an emergency plan, and use generators safely to protect your family. Stay safe, and stay prepared. 🚒⚡ #GeneratorSafety #StormSafety #SummerStorms #BePrepared #FireSafety #HampsteadFire #HampsteadVFC |
