The Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), firefighters, and line officers of the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company completed the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association (CCVESA) High Performance Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Training Program at the station Monday evening. High Performance CPR is a jurisdictional option within the Maryland Medical Protocols for Emergency Medical Services Providers that uses the pit crew approach to providing resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims, emphasizing high quality compressions with minimal interruptions. Quality CPR improves survival from cardiac arrest. Scientific studies demonstrate when CPR is performed according to guidelines, the chances of successful resuscitation increase substantially. Minimal breaks in compressions, full chest recoil, adequate compression depth, and adequate compression rate are all components of CPR that can increase survival from cardiac arrest. Together, these components combine to create High Performance CPR (HP CPR).
