3 COMMENDED FOR SAVING LIFE

By Firefighter/EMT Richard Zaykoski
May 13, 2014

Around 11:30 AM on July 21st 2013, Medic 28, dispatched for an unknown medical problem, found an unconscious patient with bruises and abrasions in a field behind a shopping center. They quickly determined that the patient was unstable with a life-threatening condition. They rapidly packaged the patient and transported him priority 1 to the hospital. Their quick actions helped to save his life.

It was later determined that the patient, while doing his standard running routine had unknowingly suffered heat stroke and had collapsed a few hundred yards from his home. It is estimated that the patient was lying in the hot sun at least an hour (probably longer) before 911 was called.

On May 12, 2014 at the fire company’s monthly meeting, Firefighter Chris Zaykoski, Paramedic Harvey Sindler, and EMT/EVO Ron Whalen were awarded commendations by Hampstead Mayor Christopher M. Nevin for their actions in saving a life that day. The fully recovered patient, Hampstead resident Bob Frances, was present to personally thank Chris, Harvey, and Ron for their assistance.
